Oryol is famous to be the third literary capital of Russia. This was the birthplace and home of I.S. Turgenev, N.S. Leskov, L.N. Andreev. The lives and work of well-known Russian writers A.A. Fet, F.I. Tyutchev, I.A. Bunin, B.K. Zaitsev, M.M. Prishvin, P.L. Proskurin and many others are closely related to this land. The museum-estate of I.S. Turgenev "Spasskoye-Lutovinovo" is the unique monument of the spiritual and inner culture of the Russian people. This place reveals the peculiarities and the life and soul of Russia.
The great names and events of the war history are closely connected with Oryol region. The residents of Oryol region revere the memory of heroes of the Great Patriotic war. In 1943 the territory of the region became the epicenter of one of the greatest battle-ground known as the Battle of the Oryol-Kursk Bulge.The German fascists were heavily defeated. This was the definitive turning point of the war in favour of the USSR and the Allies. In April, 2007 Oryol was conferred the honorary title of the Russian Federation "The City of the Martial Glory" by the decree of the President of the Russian Federation. The natives of the region are renowned not only for their feats of arms, but also for their peaceful constructive labour. Since ancient years the region has been considered to be the granary of Russia, and its dwellers have treated with shown concern about the environment.
The unique corner of virgin nature called "Orlovskoe Polesye" has saved its primordial beauty. The National Park was established there in 1994. Dozens of species of birds and animals inhabit its forests. The lakes of the park abound with fish. There you may breath the clearest air, taste berries, pick mushrooms and visit the open-air zoological enclosure, where more than 50 species of animals and birds are kept. Nowadays the special program of creating a free-living group of European bison is being successfully realized in the park. This innermost area has a lot of astonishing legends.
The ancient Russian town Bolchov, one of the centres of Orthodoxy in Russia also welcomes travelers. Despite the fact that many of the temples were destroyed, the remained architectural monuments are being restored now. After having been restored such pearls of Central Russia as Spasso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral (the Savior-Transfiguration Cathedral), The Holy Trinity Church, The Optin Convent with its very ancient Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. The pilgrims of Russia take the route to Bolkhov.
